Computers and Technology
A wider range of resources
We have a wide range of ICT resources in the school, between desktop computers, laptops and iPads. Each classroom has a Smart Board or an Interactive Whiteboard to allow for active learning.
iPads are used in all classes and in Learning Support to enhance, consolidate and further children’s learning. This gives the children an opportunity to reinforce their skills in all subjects by researching a project, learning how to code or create videos.
Scratch
For the last number of years Rang 3 children are learning SCRATCH computer programming language skills. Parents along with the Rang 3 class teachers guide the children through the programme. This is a programming language where children learn to programme and share interactive media such as stories, games and animation. As children create with Scratch, they learn to think creatively, work collaboratively and reason systematically.
The Lego Project
Third class participates in the lego project each year. This is a project organised annually by the Galway Education Centre. Each year there is a different theme with past themes including ‘Boom Town Build’. The project gives children an opportunity to work as engineers, to think about the function, strength and beauty of the structures around them and of those they build themselves.
Great emphasis is placed on teamwork and on fun! Among other skills the children learn to code as technology is part of the building process. Using a programme on the iPads children can create structures that move, for example elevators or cranes.
